Welcome to the website of Newton Abbot Chess Club

Coronavirus

Due to the continuing restrictions caused by the COVID19 outbreak, the club will be closed until further notice, but we plan to continue club activity through online and other tournaments. PLEASE SEE THE NEWS PAGE FOR DETAILS OF OUR LATEST ONLINE TOURNAMENTS.

In the meantime, we hope that all members stay safe and well.

Thanks to all the club members who have played games in the Curates and Deacons Leagues. Although we couldn't finish the tournaments completely, the top places in both leagues have already been decided.

In the Curates League, Alan Brusey came first with an unbeaten 9.5/10. Second place is still not decided as there are several games still to be played. Things are slightly clearer in the Deacons League, where Trefor Thynne came first with 8/9, and Paul Brooks was second scoring 7. The next stage will be to organise semi-final matches between the top two in each league, so Alan will be playing Paul, and Trefor will be playing the second-placed player from the Curates league. The final will take place between the winners of the semis. We also hope to award prizes to lower-graded players who have achieved good results.

We hope to organise some online chess in the coming weeks so please look out for emails outlining our plans.

In the meantime, here is the latest game played in the Deacons League, the top-of-the-table clash between Paul and Trefor.

Newton Abbot Chess Club was founded in 2005 and has become one of the most successful and active Chess clubs in Devon. We welcome chess players of all standards, so if you are an experienced player, someone who hasn't played chess for a while or an absolute beginner, why not come along and give us a try? You will be warmly welcomed.

The club meets from September to May on Thursday evenings at 7pm at the Courtenay Centre, Kingsteignton Road, Newton Abbot. We run a variety of internal competitions, enter teams in all divisions of the Torbay Chess League and also participate in the leagues of the Devon County Chess Association. We have an active junior section and encourage junior players interested in chess to come along to club nights.

We make sure that, whatever your standard, you will be able to play a friendly and enjoyable game of chess.
